About MM Swim Inspiration

Our Story

Founded in 2013 by double Olympian and six-time Commonwealth Games medallist Mel Marshall MBE, MM Swim Inspiration (MMSI) was born from a passion for inspiring the next generation of swimmers.

What began as a single training camp has grown into a powerhouse of high-performance coaching and unforgettable residential swim camps.

Under Mel’s leadership, our expert coaching team delivers world-class training that empowers swimmers to excel – both in the pool and beyond. We understand the demands of competitive swimming, which is why every MMSI experience is built to be supportive and inspiring.

No matter where you are on your swimming journey, we provide the tailored coaching, athlete education and outstanding facilities you need to reach your next level of performance. We can’t wait to welcome you into the MMSI family.

Meet the MMSI family

Melanie Marshall MBE - Founder

Mel grew up in Boston, Lincolnshire, and began her swimming journey with South Lincs Swimming Club. Her international career took off in 1995 at the European Youth Olympics, where she won four gold medals. She went on to break the British record in the 200m freestyle, rank number one in the world in that event and become a double Olympian, earning numerous World, European and Commonwealth medals along the way.

Following an illustrious swimming career, Mel has dedicated her life to inspiring and coaching the next generation of swimmers. She served as National Centre Lead Coach at the British Swimming Centre in Loughborough for eight years, guiding her swimmers to 15 World Records and eight Olympic medals, including athletes such as Adam Peaty, Anna Hopkin and Luke Greenbank.

Now Lead Coach at the Australian National Centre on the Gold Coast, Mel brings unparalleled experience and insight, knowing exactly what it takes to inspire, motivate and help swimmers to be the best version of themselves.

Meg Moss - Operations Director

Meg first trained with Redditch Swimming Club, before moving to City of Birmingham Swimming Club at the age of 10. Years of competing at a national level, alongside a demanding training schedule, Meg understands the commitment required for the competitive swimming journey. She is driven by a passion to ensure that this journey remains enjoyable for young athletes, recognising the challenges it can bring.

This passion naturally led Meg into coaching, learning from mentors including Melanie Marshall and Ian Armiger while completing a degree in Sports and Exercise Science at Loughborough University. In 2024, Meg took on the role of MMSI Operations Director, guiding the organisation forward and inspiring the next generation of swimmers.

Grant Turner - Head Coach

Grant Turner began his swimming journey with Swindon Tigersharks, a small family club in the South West of England. After early success in age-group competitions, he earned a scholarship to The Southport School in Queensland, Australia, where his swimming career continued to flourish.

He narrowly missed selection for the 2008 Olympics but achieved his dream in 2012, representing Team GB at the London Olympic Games. Grant has competed at all four major international competitions for both Great Britain and England.

Since retiring from competitive swimming, Grant has found success as a coach and now works as a secondary school biology teacher. He holds a degree in Sports Science and Coaching and has been leading our MMSI Classic Camps since 2016, helping young swimmers develop their skills and passion for the sport.

Suzanne Gumbrell - Head of Pastoral Care

Suzanne has been part of the MMSI team since 2016 and is a dedicated coach with the City of Glasgow Swim Team. She brings a wealth of experience and enthusiasm to supporting swimmers at every stage of their journey.

A proud mum of two — both of whom have progressed through the MMSI pathway — Suzanne’s connection to the swimming community runs deep. One of her children now combines swimming with coaching, while the other works full-time as a coach.

Outside the pool, Suzanne leads a busy social work team, where she applies the same leadership, empathy and passion for helping others that she brings to her coaching.

Euan Gumbrell - Assistant Coach

A former competitive swimmer himself, Euan joined MMSI in 2013, bringing an energetic and supportive coaching style focused on building confidence and skill in young athletes.

With a degree in Sports Coaching and experience across all levels of the sport, Euan combines technical expertise with infectious enthusiasm, making him an inspiring presence on the poolside. He is also the Assistant Head Coach at Ren96 Swim Team and was recently selected for the National Youth Programme coaching team.

Katie Gilman-Abel - Head of Logistics

Katie started swimming at City of Lincoln Pentaqua Swimming Club, where she competed until age 16 before moving into teaching and coaching. By 18, she was coaching swimmers of all levels, from beginners to masters, and has led sessions at Lincolnshire County and East Midlands Regional Swim Days.

She holds a degree in Sports Development and Coaching and, while stepping back from day-to-day coaching, Katie works as a full-time primary school teacher and welfare officer for her local swim club.

A valued MMSI team leader since 2016, Katie is now our Head of Logistics, guiding swimmers’ progress at our camps and ensuring all of our events run smoothly, delivering only the very best experience.

As a parent of a swimmer, I’d like to say a huge thank you for helping to provide a wonderful and exciting few days for my young daughter. It’s such a supportive environment and the energy is infectious. She has come away so happy, with new friends for life and feeling like a more confident person.
